Over 50 years ago, while in junior school, I experienced a moment that left a lasting imprint on my mind. I was in a swimming pool when I slipped into the deeper end, not hearing a nun’s instruction to hold the side. I was young, scared, and struggling to stay afloat until a classmate pulled me to safety. That fear of water never left me.

But what deepened my trauma was the tragic loss of my brother, who drowned in a whirlpool in Ecuador around 15 years ago. The river appeared calm, but a hidden current swept him into a powerful vortex. Although someone tried to save him, they had difficulty and had to let go. My brother never came home.

He was not a strong swimmer but had taken lessons before his trip. Sadly, even preparation can fall short when nature is unforgiving — especially when you’re unaware of what to do in such situations.

🎥 Finding Inspiration from a Fictional Hero

Recently, I watched a film about a veteran returning from Afghanistan. Haunted by the loss of his comrades in an IED ambush, he finds solace in therapy through fly fishing. He struggles with survivor’s guilt until someone reminds him: “You survived for a reason. Now you just have to find the reason for living”

Those words stirred something in me. I realised I had been living in fear and grief for too long. But perhaps my experiences — the fear of water, the tragedy of loss, could help others. And if I could teach people how to survive a whirlpool, maybe my brother’s death would not be in vain.

🌪️ What Is a Whirlpool?

A whirlpool is a rapidly rotating body of water formed when opposing currents meet, often near rocks, river bends, waterfalls, or tidal inlets. These swirling vortices can range in size and strength — from minor eddies to massive maelstroms — and can appear deceptively calm on the surface.

Even confident swimmers can become trapped in a whirlpool’s grip. The danger lies not only in being pulled under but also in the panic that often follows.

🛟 How to Survive a Whirlpool

When you’re caught in a powerful whirlpool or vortex, the suction is usually strongest at the surface and mid-water — so diving down and swimming away horizontally from the vortex’s central axis can help you escape its grip. It’s counterintuitive, but it’s based on fluid dynamics. If you ever find yourself caught in a whirlpool, knowledge and calmness are your greatest tools. Here’s what experts advise:

  1. Don’t Panic Panicking wastes energy and causes hyperventilation, which increases the risk of drowning. Try to stay calm and focused.
  2. Float, Don’t Fight Don’t try to swim directly against the current. Instead, float on your back to conserve energy and orient yourself.
  3. Swim Diagonally or With the Current Rather than fighting the spin, try to angle yourself diagonally to swim out of the vortex’s pull. Sometimes, going with the current briefly helps you break free from the outer ring.
  4. Dive Deep In some situations, the suction is strongest near the surface. Diving deep and then swimming away from the centre can help you escape the grip of the whirlpool.
  5. Signal for Help If others are nearby, wave and call for help — but be aware they may also risk their lives attempting to save you. Always alert professionals if possible.

🧠 Mental Health and Trauma: A Lasting Impact

Losing someone to drowning, especially in such a tragic and helpless way, can cause complex trauma. Survivors may experience:

  • PTSD
  • Water phobia
  • Survivor’s guilt
  • OCD and intrusive thoughts, particularly around safety and control

If you ever find yourself caught in a whirlpool, remember these crucial steps:

    • Try to break free of the vortex by swimming diagonally or along the current, not directly against it.

    • Then swim horizontally away from the central pull toward the outer edge of the vortex.
  6. Surface Safely
    • Once out of the vortex’s grip, slowly rise to the surface at an angle away from the whirlpool.
  7. Signal for Help
    • If anyone is nearby, wave and shout once you’re out of immediate danger.
  8. Aftercare
    • Seek immediate medical attention — whirlpools can cause injury or hypothermia, even if you escape.
    • Get support for mental health trauma afterward. Even near-drowning experiences can leave lasting emotional effects.
