Britain has seen a notable rise in the number of individuals claiming long-term sickness benefits, according to the latest data from the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) over 2.5 million people are now classified as economically inactive due to long-term illness, a record high.
The definition of disability should never be reduced to a checklist of tasks. The ability to wash, dress, manage finances, or socialize does not negate the presence of a disability. A person’s disability is defined by the challenges they face in navigating the world, not by their occasional ability to perform basic tasks.
Mental health care must prioritise dignity, autonomy, and the least invasive treatment methods available. With modern therapies, supportive communities, and ongoing innovation in psychiatric medicine, society has both the opportunity and the responsibility to move away from treatments that compromise safety and human rights.

The correspondence, sent Monday evening (07/07/25), follows a coordinated campaign by disabled people’s organisations (DPOs) who presented damning evidence of how the proposed cuts to out-of-work disability benefits could worsen the lives of thousands of disabled people.
Hate crime is a violation of human rights and a crime against the very values of equality, dignity, and respect. It tears communities apart and leaves victims in emotional ruins. Society must come together to condemn hate, strengthen the law, and support victims. Most importantly, we must remember that diversity is our strength, and no one should be made to feel unsafe for simply being who they are.
