As the government struggles with mounting pressures on the public purse, it must confront a harsh reality: many people living with disabilities and long-term illnesses are being driven to despair by poverty, exacerbated by the rising cost of living.
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has recently introduced new rules for Jobcentre interactions, sparking widespread concern among claimants of Universal Credit (UC), Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), and Personal Independence Payment (PIP). Governments sometimes employ coercive measures to ensure that citizens are actively seeking work, increasing their working hours, or attending mandatory appointments—sometimes without considering an individual’s personal circumstances, including disability or self-employment. Such coercion can often infringe on a number of human rights and statutory protections.
Coercion by government agencies, especially when compounded by financial difficulty, can deepen discrimination against individuals with disabilities, forcing them into situations that compromise their rights and well-being.
